HinduBooking Business: Students of Sri Sivananda Balalaya helping visitors with books displayed at the book fair for children in Trichy on Thursday.

Trichy: A manager, hardly 10 years old, ushers in the visitors to his stall, as his equally old sales persons break into smiles. After flashing a catalogue of books, he then helps the visitors to pick the books that suit their taste. Billing the purchases, the cashier presents them with a gift.

“We give you a five percent discount for books purchased above Rs.50,” the kid tells the visitors of the ‘Novel Book Fair’ at Sri Sivananda Balalaya. The book fair, as the school authorities say, is “by the students and for the students.” Ten stalls each manned by five students, have been stacked with books of all kinds. From R.K.Narayan to Ruskin Bond, there is an extensive collection of books by popular authors. Dedicated to young readers, the three-day expo brings together books on cartoon characters, bed-time stories and general knowledge. On display are interactive encyclopedias, biographies, dictionaries and books on quiz, colouring and science.

Freebies are aplenty at the expo. First five visitors at each stall are given surprise gifts. For those purchasing books above Rs.50, there will be a lucky draw that promises attractive prizes for the winner. The books, sourced Mallika Book House, are chosen by the students, who have aesthetically decked up each classroom with over hundred books. Details on popular children’s authors have also been collected and put on show at the stalls. Visitors can run through the profile of the authors before choosing from the collection.

“We aim at introducing to the world of books through such activities. They get a feel of it when they market the books. Apart from improving their communication skills, this also gives them an exposure to books of their age. The students also get to learn about authors while preparing their profiles,” says school Correspondent K.G.Meenakshi. The fair, coming to a close on Saturday, is open from 9.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m.
